MT. HOLLY, NC
1-27-2011
The
chapel recently installed two statue niches on either
side of its main altar, one of which was fabricated from
scratch by a parishioner.
When
the chapel was purchased in 2000, a 150-year old wooden
neo-gothic altar and two matching statue niches were
obtained and installed. A third larger niche was also
included, but could not be utilized.
Nearly
a decade later, the pastor asked a young man of the
parish to make a replica of the larger, unused niche.
100
board feet of African mahogany was used for the project
and all of the carving was done by hand using
traditional tools and techniques. Various details such
as the rose-bosses and capitals were also hand-gilded.
