It was recently
reported1 that a horrific total of over 54 million innocent
lives were aborted in America since this heinous crime of fetal murder
was “legalized” 39 years ago by Roe vs. Wade. But also noted was some
“good news”, possibly signifying that the tide is slowly turning
against this grave immorality. Here we summarize a few examples:
-
The five states
of Florida, Idaho, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Virginia have already
begun restricting insurance coverage of abortion.
-
“…more than 30
states have either introduced or are laying the groundwork to
introduce an opt-out bill as soon as their legislative calendars
allow. Many have already passed such legislation like Arizona,
Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Utah, Mississippi”2
-
Americans United
for Life reports that “an unprecedented level of pro-life
activity in the states” has been taking place; for example, 70
pro-life bills were passed into legislation in 2011.
-
Also last year,
pressure to de-legalize abortion was kept up, with the legislatures
of 47 states required to consider 460 bills.
-
Kansas: this
state truly has been “bleeding” for the past few years as Planned
Parenthood and abortionists have been fighting for their very
survival against an array of charges of illegal medical practices
brought by the state’s own (now former) district attorney.
Presently, there are strong legal efforts to grant legal protections
for doctors, pharmacists, and health-care providers who oppose
abortion, while also working to deprive abortion agencies of
indirect taxpayer support.
-
Ohio: last year
the governor put his signature onto four bills that restricted
abortions or removed some of the shackles formerly arresting
pro-life activities. The success of these new laws caused Mike
Gonidakis, Ohio Right to Life president, to quip: “Never in the
history of the pro-life movement have we had so many legislative
measures enacted in one year.”3
While the road to
completely reversing Roe vs. Wade in the United States still has a
long way to go, nevertheless, we must remain hopeful in Christ’s
eventual victory and continue to pray for this end. Along with our
prayers and acts of reparation for this public offense, we need to
continue laboring for the repeal of existing pro-abortion legislation.
There are also works of charity that can be performed, such as
providing assistance to mothers or even adopting unwanted children.
All such works contribute to the promotion of life against society’s
current prevalent culture of death.
We must also keep
in mind that integral to this effort is the restoration of the civil
recognition of Truth (i.e., true doctrine). For without the
Church’s true doctrine, morals do not have firm ground to stand upon,
as proven by the Protestant Reformation which resulted in an immediate
moral disintegration in society.
We pray to the Holy
Innocents, those infants that shed their blood for the Christ Child,
that in recognizing Him as King, that life will flourish and peace
will reign upon the earth.
