The
First Saturday of March was observed in a special way in
honor of Our Lady by the chapter of the
Altar and Rosary Society at
St. Vincent de Paul Church.
Following Mass and Benediction, a Mother-Daughter brunch
was enjoyed by 60 women, young adults, and children. The
members also verbally united their intentions to the
Sacred and Immaculate Hearts; this written petition of
prayers was placed on the altar during a novena offered
for the Annunciation.
The parishioners were then treated to a well-researched
talk on altar linens which covered their historical
development, symbolism and how they are used during
Mass, some background on linen as a textile and its use
as commanded by God for the Old Testament Temple in the
Wilderness.
Mr. Louis Tofari gave a lively,
interesting, and informative presentation which included
a video on the traditional manufacturing of linen, an
informative handout, and copious pictures to colorfully
illustrate the topics covered (e.g., the flax
plant, the Shroud of Turin, historical samples of
ancient altar and chalice linens, and some exquisite
examples of antependiums—a part of the altar vesture
connected with the altar cloths).
Those present appreciated the new in-depth understanding of
the linens one observes from the pew and which the
members of the Altar and Rosary Society have the
privilege to handle when laundering or caring them.
Additional material may be offered at a future date.
